前言（Preface）
An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but will never break.
This exhibition draws its title from the invisible red thread of fate in Chinese folklore. While the proverb refers to romantic soul mates, in this context it relates to their work as a marriage of cultural perspectives. Both artists share a textile art sensibility, producing meticulously hand-crafted and labor-intensive work. The physicality of these time-consuming works allows them to break past the boundaries of their bodies to communicate across languages and cultures. In this exhibition they blend traditional Chinese aesthetics and techniques with their previous material explorations. The layers of material are used to create layers of meaning: the first layer relates to the propaganda and performative elements of Chinese culture, while secondary layers reflect their attempts to achieve a deeper, more nuanced understanding of China based on their experience at the Shangyuan Art Residency, all of which is of course colored by their own cultural biases. The resulting works represent the red thread, stretched and tangled, yet still connecting these different cultural perspectives in one exhibition.
一根細紅線連接著兩個注定會遇見的人，超越時空和外在環境。這根線也許會被扯松或糾纏成結，但它絕不會斷開。
這次展覽的題目來源于在中國民間流傳的決定人們姻緣的紅線的傳說。紅線本來決定的是人們的愛情，在此次的展覽中，它代表的是兩種不同文化視角之間的結合。兩位藝術家都對紡織品藝術有著敏感性，創作出一針一線耗費大量人力細心制作的作品。這些相當耗時的作品的物質性使得這兩位藝術家能夠跨越自身的邊界，透過語言和文化的隔閡交流起來。在這次的展覽中，他們將傳統的中式審美和技藝與他們之前對材料的探索結合起來。材料的層次在這里被用來創造意義的層次：第一層反映的是中國文化中宣傳和表演性的因素；第二層反映的是他們通過在上苑藝術館的經歷，試圖對中國有更深入和更細致的理解。當然，這些都脫不開藝術家自己的文化偏見。最終的成品代表了這種紅線，盡管被扯松并糾纏成結，但仍然成功地在此次展覽種連接了這些不同文化的視角。
