Dear Director Cheng Xiaobei:
On behalf of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, I would like to invite you to visit our campus in spring 2010 in your role as Director of the Shang Yuan Art Museum.
We are deeply impressed by the mission of the Beijing North Shangyuan Modern Art Museum to provide established and emerging Chinese artists with the support necessary to pursue their art. We see many promising possibilities for exchanges between your program and our art department, which is one of the finest undergraduate public art programs in the region.
There would be several goals for your visit. First, we would like to continue to explore the possibility of an artist exchange program between the Beijing North Shangyuan Modern Art Museum and the University of Wisconsin River Falls art department. We believe that such an exchange would be beneficial for both our programs. The project will give Chinese artists the opportunity to pursue their art in the United States under the mentorship of our American art faculty while it also gives our American art faculty and students the opportunity visit your facility.
Second, we would like to invite you to exhibit your photography on our campus while you are here. I believe that your photography, which documents the people and landscape of China, will provide our campus with an exceptional, personal perspective on your country. We will arrange a reception and public talk associated with the exhibit.
I understand that Mrs. Anne Kao, who will be serving as an advisor to our artist exchange project and speaks fluent Chinese, will serve as your guide and translator. The university has had a relationship with Mrs. Kao for over thirty years and is grateful for her support and assistance as we pursue this project.
Finally, your visit will allow you learn more about the vibrant art scene in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-Saint Paul, which is just thirty-five miles from our campus. We will arrange for you to meet with artists, museum directors and gallery owners while you are here.
We are hoping that you would be able to visit our campus in early April for a duration of two to three weeks, as this is the best time in our semester. Your visit will coincide with our Asian Salon, a program that we have created with the generous support of a US Department of Education grant to encourage faculty to learn more about Asia. You will find many faculty and students here eager to meet you and learn from you about China.
Please let me know if you need any more information from me at this time. Let me express again how excited we are to host you here on our campus in the spring.
Happy new year and best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
Terry Brown, Ph.D.
